The Maskelynes produced their last Christmas Season shows in London for the season 1934-1935. Sadly, the business went into receivership in 1935. Chris Charlton decided to have a go at creating a new Theatre of Magic at the Royalty Theatre for the Christmas Season 1935-1936. Chris Charlton topped the bill which also included Fred Culpitt. This poster is full of press opinions.

Chris Charlton was a bill topping magician on the variety stage. In this clip from the 1930s you can see him performing tricks with pebbles. When the group pop up from behind the wall, from left to right we have young Jean Davenport, Eve, Wyn, Lewis, Betty Charlton (daughter), Chris Charlton, Dorothy (wife), Wynne and an unidentified lady said to be a friend of the Charltons. Later in the clip we also see young Betty and Gus Davenport.

Still photographs from the Davenport family cine films

The collection contains cine film taken by the family, much of it from the 1930s. The film has been transferred to tape, and more recently converted to an electronic form, in order to preserve the images. During this process some of the more interesting frames have been printed out as photographs. The magician on the top sheet of photographs shown here is Gus Davenport performing in Berlin in 1937. The face of Ottokar Fischer can be seen in one of the photographs lower down in the pile.
