It was around this time that Lewis was billed as The Bewilderist. In 1924 he had broken into the top variety theatres in Britain and his colour changing waistcoats trick was invariably mentioned in press write ups. In this advertisement Lewis warns other performers not to copy the trick.
To the right of this advertisement is one for Hemsley’s Scenic Studios. Harry Hemsley also had a very long career on the stage, on radio and on television. He often collaborated with Oswald Williams. At the time of his death in 1951, at the age of 73, he was under contract to appear in the BBC television programme Children’s Hour. He was a remarkable man. More information on Hemsley may be found in a talk given by Anne Goulden – see N2339.
