This is a spelling trick which has an amusing patter line. The magician spells out an item of food, which always turns up on the last card. Whenever your gentleman helper tries, he ends up with the beer card, or another jokey card. The outline routine may be found on the envelope in which the trick was sold, as illustrated here. Note that the backs of the cards show a Davenport Demon and the initials L D for Lewis Davenport. Complete with instructions.
