Lewis Davenport subscribed to a press cutting service from Woolgar & Roberts. The cuttings allowed him to see the reports on his stage act from a wide range of newspapers. This one is unusual as it reports on him returning from Germany by air, rather than by the train-boat-train route he had used in the past. I have no doubt that he did return by air, but it is much more likely that his trip to Germany was prompted by his conjuring business interests rather than by performing. The piece in The Performer says that: ‘Lewis Davenport, magician, who has been playing a season on the Continent, where, as usual, his line of fine tricks made him one of the most popular turns on each bill on which he returned.’ The problem with this is that Lewis’s performance notebook does not list a single show in Germany. Whether this ‘error’ in the article is down to The Performer or to Lewis is impossible to say.
