Dick Ritson

Said to be an Anderson coin holder

Said to be an Anderson coin holder

It is impossible to prove the provenance of this item, but I include it here because it is an interesting item in its own right. It came into the Davenport Collection in 1982 as a gift from Norwich magician Harry Carson. Previously it belonged to Dick Ritson, a good friend of Harry’s and a well respected Yorkshire magician and magic historian. History does not tell us why Dick believed it originally came from Anderson (1814-1874).

Finger and thimble made by magician Harry Carson

Harry Carson was a skilled magician and prop maker. In his youth he was friendly with Dick Ritson from Sheffield. All the visiting pro magicians would visit Dick, and so Harry had an amazing introduction to magic at a young age. His expertise was invaluable in the repair and restoration of many items in the Davenport Collection. These two items were a gift in the mid 1980s.

Okito glass

Okito glass

This glass is filled with a coloured liquid and then the magician can produce a dry handkerchief from it. This design was probably imported by Davenports from Conradi Horster in Germany. This particular glass belonged to Dick Ritson, who gave it to Harry Carson. In 1988 Harry Carson gave it to John and Anne Davenport. This glass is similar to Ref. no. N16, although somewhat taller and with a thicker glass wall.
