This photograph was found in the John Salisse Archive in a pack of items associated with George Cooke. It now resides in the Davenport Collection. George Cooke and J.N. Maskelyne were in a Rifle Volunteer corp in Cheltenham, but they do not appear in this photograph. We asked Cheltenham local historian Sue Rowbotham to research the photograph. Sue has kindly given us permission to share her thoughts in the PDF. She provides a possible explanation for why the photograph was included in the material on George Cooke. It’s an interesting story.
