When J. N. Maskelyne moved from the Egyptian Hall to St. George’s Hall in 1905, his opening production was The Coming Race. This was a magical play based on Lord Lytton’s novel The Coming Race. The novel is about mysterious people, the Vril-ya, who live in caverns deep below the surface of the earth. It was dramatized by David Christie Murray and Nevil Maskelyne. The American actor Hermann Vezin took the part of the Tur, the ruler of the Vril-ya. The play was a disastrous failure.
