Imitation eggs

Magicians often found it convenient to use an imitation egg rather than a real one, so avoiding potentially messy accidents.

Another good reason for using an imitation was that real eggs were hard to come by in the UK during, and for some years after, WW2. The material from which the eggs were made is very likely to be celluloid.
