Electric window figure: demon on stairs

The demon moves its arms, eyes and eyebrows while the lights flash on and off. There is no evidence that this figure was ever in a Davenport shop window. It was found in very poor condition by John Davenport in a Davenport store and in the 1970s was renovated by Tony Middleton, who may be seen in one of the images. The motor was 120 volts and we believed that the figure may well have been made in Germany.

During 2024-2025 the automaton was repaired by Michael and Maria Start of The House of Automata. This exposed paper maché made from German newspaper suggesting that the automaton was made in 1928. For reasons of safety the original motor was replaced by one of lower voltage. The original motor has been retained and mounted inside the case. The last image shows the newly restored demon standing on a carpet sourced from the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul.
