Black stop-go cube

The magician holds the cord vertically and demonstrates that the cube slides down freely. Yet, when desired, the magician can stop the cube at any point on its descent. When spectators try to duplicate this, the cube refuses to stop anywhere other than when it reaches the bottom of the cord. The manufacturer of this cube is not known, but the secret that allows it to work is cleverly hidden.
