This is Elcock’s original artwork for page 188 of the November 1913 issue of ‘The Magician Monthly’. The sketches are from the Magicians’ Club entertainment on 9 November. Elcock’s sketches cover Mr Chas Morritt; Mr David Devant; Chris Van Bern; Eugene Devôt; Lerano; Mr George; Chas Mansfield; Capt Kettle; Mr Ernest Sewell; Mr Collins; Chas H. Vernon; Hewson Brown; Mr Swingler; Claude Chandler. Mysteriously, there is also a sketch of Archibald the Pigeon. The evening is written up on page 185 of the same issue, also illustrated here.
At the bottom of the artwork it reads: Sketched at The Magic Circle Theatre, London. It is signed De Vega 1914.
The signature in the bottom right hand corner is ‘Elcock 14’, presumably 1914. The illusion “Biff” was first presented at St. George’s Hall in 1913, and “Walking Through a Wall” in 1914.
The cartoon was published in the ‘Times Magazine’ Saturday 11 December 1993.
The cartoon was published in the ‘Sunday Mirror’ on 19 June 1977.
This ornate presentation was made at The Magicians’ Club Annual Dinner at the Imperial Hotel, London 17 September 1922. It is signed at the bottom by many well known magicians.
This appears to be the original artwork from which illustrations were made. The business moved into 39/41 New Oxford Street at the end of 1938.
