Lieutenant Walter Cole's Merry Folks

Lieutenant Walter Cole was a well known ventriloquist in the Victorian music hall era. For more information see, for example, 'I Can See Your Lips Moving' by Valentine Vox, published by Kaye & Ward Ltd in 1981.

Lithograph for The Great Chang Polka, Egyptian Hall

This poster publicises The Great Chang Polka. Chang was a giant who held audience at the Egyptian Hall in 1865. The caption tells us 'Shaking hands with everybody within reach, and The Giant's reach is long, to the tune of a very pretty Polka, composed by Chang's "Aide de Camp", Mr. Marquis Chisholm. (Vide Times, Sept 28th 1865)'. We are told the polka is performed at all levees at the Egyptian Hall. Much is written on the internet about Chang Woo Gow, The Great Chang, not all of which tells the same story. The lithograph is signed Alfred Concanen, a leading lithographer of the Victorian era. The Davenport Collection also has a handout from 1865 which contains Chang's address, as well as that of Chung Mow, who is the small person on the right of the poster. See Ref. Lithograph for Mr. Fleming Norton in his entertainment 'Mr. Perkins's Pic-nic'

The image shows Mr. Fleming Norton acting the part of Mr. Samuel Spivins in his musical and mimetic entertainment 'Mr. Perkins's Pic-nic'. The lithograph is signed Alfred Concanen, a leading lithographer of the Victorian era. We know that Norton performed Mr. Perkins's Picnic at the Egyptian Hall in 1874. However, this poster has the handwritten date 1869 without a mention of the venue. Fleming Norton also appeared at the Egyptian Hall under the Maskelyne banner in 1886 when he and Charles Bertram took over from Maskelyne and Cooke who went on a provincial tour.

The Gala Week was from 27 March 1933 to 1 April 1933. This poster is in the Paul Kieve Collection. We are grateful for his permission in 2019 to display it on this website.

Egyptian Hall poster for Mr. Frank Lincoln assisted by Paganini Redivivus

Lincoln was an American Humourist and Entertainer. He opened at the Egyptian Hall on 1 November 1882 while Maskelyne and Cooke were touring. The poster is dated in ink Nov 16th 1882.

Chung Ling Soo poster overprinted The Magical Production

A half sheet lithographic poster printed by Horrocks & Co. Ltd., Ashton-under-Lyne. The original poster has been overprinted THE MAGICAL PRODUCTION. The Chung Ling Soo Magical Production was the first attempt to tour Soo's show soon after his death. Soo's place was taken by Ching Wu (Alfred Banks). For further details see Dean Arnold's excellent book 'The Fairground Soo' published by Mike Caveney's Magic Words. The poster, without any overprinting, may be found under ref. N615.
